Installation of a Flexible Preformed Pond

What You Will Need:

  • Scissors
  • Flat shovel
  • Chalk and/or rope
  • Excess dirt
  • Easy access to water

Directions

  1. Remove Folded Pond and Streamlet from Box and cut tape.
  2. Unroll Pond and Streamlet. Once streamlet is unfolded, push out the sides and let the pond stand in direct sunlight for an afternoon to fully expand. The pond and streamlet have been compressed for a long period of time. You may have to apply direct force in order for the pond and streamlet to regain its shape.
  3. Place your unfolded preformed pond in the desired location. Mark out the perimeter of the pond with a flat shovel or chalk.
  4. Dig out the marked area so that it is slightly larger than the depth and perimeter of the pond. It is best to start digging from the middle of the area, and by working your way outwards. Remove all debris (stones, roots, etc.) to avoid punctures. Reserve the dirt that is dug for use as backfill.
  5. Place the pond in the hole and level the surrounding ground in all directions, so that the soil around your pond is a little bit lower than the lip of your pond. This will prevent water runoff from bringing in any toxins or dirt into your pond.
  6. Install and hook up the pump.
  7. Now it’s time to backfill your pond. Before backfilling, check to ensure that the leveled pond is just above the ground. Start to fill the pond with water while backfilling with sand or fine soil. This ensures that the backfilling process does not warp or bend the wall. Check the level frequently as it is possible the pond could shift. Be sure that the soil is tightly packed around the pond for maximum support.
  8. Add water to the pond.
  9. Turn on your pump.
  10. Landscape around your pond. Place flat rocks such that they slightly overhang the edge of the pond. Landscape the pond to your liking.

Winter care: the pump should be cleaned and removed from the pond for indoor storage during the winter season. The pond should be drained and either covered, or taken inside, such that debris does not accumulate in the pond over the course of the winter season.
