Installation of a Preformed Pond

What You Will Need:

  • Flat shovel
  • Chalk and/or rope
  • Excess dirt
  • Easy access to water
  • Level

It is important to find the perfect spot for your pond. Find an area that can support the depth and width of the pond that you are going to install. If you have a 2-tier pond, then place the top tier over the bottom tier to verify that you have sufficient room to work with. Please keep in mind that the top pond will need to be elevated above the bottom pond.  Mark out the area that you will be installing the pond using a rope.

Once you have gathered everything you need, then it is time to start digging. Start by removing the sod in the area that you have marked with the rope. It is best to start digging from the middle out.

To prepare the hole(s) for the pond(s), you must remove any sharp stones or roots, which can puncture the pond. Once the area is clear, place the pond inside the hole and ensure that the pond is level in all directions. Use the left-over dirt to backfill the areas around the pond. The lip of the pond should be above ground level. It is extremely important that the dirt is firmly packed around the pond to ensure that the pond keeps its shape and won’t bow with water pressure.

Now you can install the upper pond and hook up the pump. Follow the pump instructions in order to properly assemble the pump. You may have to use hose clamps to clamp both ends of the tubing.

Once the tubing and pump are attached, the pond can now be filled with water. Place the pump in the center of the pond and do not turn it on until it is completely submersed in water. After all tiers of the pond are full, then the pump can be turned on. The area around the pond can be landscaped to suit your needs.

Winter care - the pump should be cleaned and removed from the pond for indoor storage during the winter season. The pond should be drained and either covered, or taken inside, such that debris does not accumulate in the pond over the course of the winter season.
