Since 1980, the North American generation of municipal solid waste has grown by 60% - surpassing 254 million tons per year in 2007. Composting not only helps the environment by reducing the amount of solid organic waste that ends up in landfills, but it also reduces harmful greenhouse gases. The breakdown or organic material in landfills is anaerobic (without oxygen), which results in harmful methane greenhouse gases being produced. Composting is an aerobic process that does not produce methane.
